The Borderline, 27th March 2002

What does pop mean to you? Young, pretty, well groomed models dancing and miming to a backing track? OK, now think back to what pop used to mean. That's it, bands who could write spine-chillingly good music AND have the talent to play it themselves. Well, never fear, it's back... and it's louder!

The set starts with last year's acclaimed debut single 'Something Real'. The 45s are clearly well practiced. Every single note, beat and harmony comes together to make fantastically ear-pleasing music.

In lead singer Matt Hales, the 45s have a born front man. He's clearly at ease on stage, conveys the feeling of the music perfectly, and looks like the guy at the local indie club that all the girls have had their eye on for months. Bonus.

Highlights of the set include recent single 'Waiting for my heart to break' and a relatively new song, 'Natural Wonder'. The latter, with its bouncy, incredibly catchy melody, and its retro styling, is quickly becoming a live favourite, and is surely a contender for future single.

The whole band appears to be in high spirits throughout the set. This is clearly a band that enjoys what they do. So, it would seem, do the crowd, as there are plenty of people dancing along to one tune-packed song after another.

With every gig they play, more and more people, it would seem, start asking themselves "where have this band been all my life?!". Gradually, people are catching on and noticing this hope for the future. Don't get left behind - see this band now before you have to pay upwards of 20 quid to sit at the back of an arena gig for the privilege.
